    Flatfish juveniles start out bilaterally symmetrical and swimming upright. As they mature, one eye migrates across the top of the skull to join the other eye. This results in an asymmetrical adult with a blind side that is flat and usually white, and an eyed side that is somewhat rounded, pigmented, and has both eyes. The adult takes up a benthic existence lying and swimming on its blind side. This right-eyed sole is commonly caught as bycatch by shrimp trawlers from Baja California to Peru.
